THE WORLD’S MOST COMPREHENSIVE AND AMBITIOUS DATA INITIATIVE

Dubai Data is defined as any data relating to any aspect of the Government, economy, culture and life within the Emirate of Dubai. To govern and regulate its use and sharing, the Dubai Data Law was created as the world’s most comprehensive data initiative of its kind, with the aim to boost collaboration and innovation in the city.

The Dubai Data initiative was created by decree of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed to enable accessibility of data between government and non-government entities. A committee of experts and key decision makers in the city have been working together under the guidance of committee chairman Abdulla Al Madani (CEO of Corporate Technical Support Services at RTA) to craft the Dubai Data Law, which has been announced in October 2015 through His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in his position as Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The implementation of the Data Law is staged into two distinct phases, in which the first will span only government sectors, as well as collaborative outreach into non-government sectors. Based on this dialogue the Data Law will then be extended to the non-government sectors within 2016.

In covering all Dubai Data, and installing comprehensive and foremost data privacy oriented policies covering open and shared data sets, Dubai aims to realize its smart city vision of becoming the world’s happiest city based on seamless, efficient, impactful and safe experiences provided to all residents and visitors. In promoting data transparency, in particular in sharing government owned data, Smart Dubai is looking to increase governmental service efficiency, and at the same time fosters innovation in non-government sectors.
