Dubai DoF Directs Returns of ‘Dirham Al Khair’ Initiative in the ‘Year of Zayed’ to Fulfill the Needs of Citizens

Dubai Government’s Department of Finance (DoF) announced that the returns of ‘Dirham Al Khair’ initiative have exceeded AED 1.3 million since launched in Q4 2017 till end of the year. All donations collected via Smart Dubai’s ePay portal, in collaboration with Smart Dubai Government Establishment, the technology arm of Smart Dubai, will be used in several channels of humanitarian aid inside the country.

DoF indicated its intention to partner with a charity entity to implement projects such as maintenance of old homes for citizens, settle building loans of national projects, build houses for citizens and settle bank loans for insolvent citizens.

On 7th of October 2017, in collaboration with Smart Dubai, DoF had officially launched an initiative to raise donations electronically from Dubai Government customers, and to use such donations in charitable activities in the Year of Giving.

“The ‘Dirham Al Khair’ initiative is a manifestation of a key element of charity and humanitarian work in the UAE, since His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE President, called for 2017 to be a year of giving. Such a trend also continued this year, as the prudent leadership announced 2018 to be the ‘Year of Zayed’, in response to the call by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai”, said Abdulrahman Saleh Al Saleh, DoF Director General.

The ‘Dirham Al Khair’ initiative seeks to make donating available to Dubai Government customers using Smart Dubai’s ePay portal, by allowing customers paying fees for government and non-government transactions to donate some money at the end of the payment process, whether on Dubai Now app or government and non-government websites approved for making payments via ePay. Smart Dubai had added a special technical update on ePay portal to activate the initiative and enable customers to optionally donate AED 10 or any of its multiples. The donated amount selected by the customer is added to the transactions fees at the end of the payment process. DoF then collects the donation amount and redirects to the beneficiaries.

DoF Director General stressed the importance of DoF’s role in the charity scene since the beginning of last year and until passing the beacon of good to the Year of Zayed. “DoF always seeks to engage the community, whether in the Year of Good, in the Year of Zayed, or in the following years, by allowing users of government services to donate easily through smart financial channels. The amount of donations under ‘Dirham Al Khair’ initiative exceeded AED 1.3m since launch. Donations were part of 45,996 transactions completed in less than 3 months. We are keen to continue such efforts in line with directions of the prudent leadership, and in collaboration with relevant government entities, to achieve sustainable charity work now and in the future”, Al Saleh added.

Further, Dr. Aisha Bint Butti Bin Bishr, Director General of the Smart Dubai Office, expressed her pride in partnering with DoF. “We are proud to partner with DoF in ‘Dirham Al Khair’ initiative in the Year of Zayed, which embodies meanings of good and giving, embedded by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in the UAE community and people. Collective responsibility is a priority for Smart Dubai, and we have taken it upon ourselves from the beginning, through all our initiatives and projects, to enhance citizens’ happiness as a main goal, and improve their quality of life."

"Dirham Al Khair initiative comes to complement a set of innovative services and initiatives, allowing all Dubai Government Customers to contribute to social work in a smart and easy way. Until the end of last year, 17,841 payment transactions have been made via Dubai Now platform alone, collecting AED 246,146, which reflects customers’ increasing use of smart channels to complete their transactions and make their donations,” Dr. Aisha added.
