RTA: Dubai Tram

The Dubai Tram was planned by the Road Transport Authority (RTA) as part of the integrated public transport network of Dubai to service some of the busiest and most important tourism areas.

The completed first phase of the Dubai Tram spans 10.6Km in length & stops over at 11 stations. It is already the longest catenary-free tram system in the world and the only one outside Europe. The system is also the first in the world to have air-conditioned stations with platform screen doors. Other features include a Gold-cabin, two dedicated cabins for Ladies & Children, and the new Supervised Vehicle Operation (SVO) mode that ensures accurate station stops and safety during passenger transfer.

The project has succeeded in reducing traffic congestion in the areas it serves, and according to Mattar Al Tayer, Executive Director of the RTA, has “also minimized carbon emissions, sustaining the environment and improving the living of residents.”
