Dubai Municipality: Landfill Gas Flaring & Power Generation at Al Qusais Landfill

As of December 2016, 117 countries have ratified the ‘Paris Agreement’ within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UAE included. Dubai Municipality is making significant contributions in the pursuit of achieving the UAE’s goals as part of the agreement within the UNFCCC through initiatives such as the LFG Project at Al Qusais Landfill. Its mission is to prevent Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and especially Methane (CH4) emissions from the landfill, which has 21 times greater ‘global warming potential’ than CO2. Moreover, true to its sustainable nature, the LFG project then uses the captured methane from the landfill to power itself, making it self-sustainable.

The project is registered under the ‘Clean Development Scheme' of the UNFCCC, which enables the project to receive Carbon Credits based on the amount of pollutants it prevents from escaping into the atmosphere, which could be traded, enabling revenue generation.

This sustainable project helps to improve air quality around the landfill site, protects public health, safety, and contributes to the UAE’s goal of reducing air pollutant emissions.
