Dubai Chamber: Transforming the University Campus into a Sustainable Community at the University of Dubai

In line with the ‘Smart & Sustainable City’ theme of the ‘Dubai Strategic Plan 2021’, Dubai Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) has primarily selected the new ‘University of Dubai’ design with environmental sustainability in mind. When the campus is completed, it will set a benchmark for campuses in Dubai in terms of low CO2 emissions, utilities, and transportation use. For example, the University of Dubai team’s ambitious goal is to lower energy expenditure at the site by a third of the UAE standard, to 85kWh/m2/year.

Some of the features of this new sustainable campus that will enable it to achieve its goals include:
1) A ‘Free Cooling System’: This ventilation system harnesses cool ambient air during winter seasons to ventilate the interior of building spaces rather than use artificial cooling, reducing cooling energy expenditure.

2) CO2 Sensors: Excess CO2 in a space can lead to feeling unwell, & deterioration of performance. If the CO2 levels in a building exceed a set value, CO2 sensors, in coordination with a building automation system, would draw in fresh air or open windows automatically to reduce CO2 levels. Improving student & faculty health & performance.

3) Smart Lighting Controls: The spiral building design is optimized for natural lighting, & uses plenty of glass to allow natural light into classrooms and halls. Moreover, ‘Smart Lighting’ is enabled by ‘Presence detection’ sensors, & lux (light) level detections to reduce electric light use.

4) Access Control Systems & CCTV’s, along with other Healthy & Safety building systems provide safety.

5) Chiller Cooling Tower & other cooling tech: Improve the efficiency by which air in the building is artificially cooled.

6) Energy & Water sub-metering systems: Alerts building management to high energy & water consumption and provides relevant data, and enables the team to take corrective actions

7) Flexible campus timings, as well as Bus Parking Areas & Cycle sheds, will reduce the load on transport infrastructure and possible traffic congestions.
