As a mean to establish a smart city 24/7 access to the internet is key. In collaboration with telecom provider du Smart Dubai has set out to provided free WiFi access city-wide in all public areas.

The free service enables residents and visitors of Dubai to access social media services, in special cases to browse the internet limitless, and always enables full browsing of government websites, service and apps, such as DubaiNow – an application combining information for residents and visitors - at high speed. In providing a complementary service du supports uptake of government applications and services without any projected affect on their corporate revenue. According to du CEO Sultan this smart city initiative would benefit all partners, and the people of Dubai.

“Dubai will become a truly smart city when people coming in and out can access complementary Wi-Fi in a convenient and seamless manner,” said Mr Sultan.

In 2015, Wifi UAE was launched, and is already offered in more than 200 locations in Dubai. The locations include the Dubai Tram, Dubai Metro, Knowledge Village, the DIFC, Dubai Media City, Emaar Boulevard, Global Village and du retail outlets. The coverage will further extend within Dubai, while at the same time covering Abu Dhabi. It is expected that the coverage in Dubai and Abu Dhabi will reach 90% by 2017.
